Artist Bio

Jason McGroarty (b. 1992) is an Irish artist and photographer based in New York. His work blurs the boundary between nature and civilization through carefully constructed images of animals inhabiting urban environments, captured with a raw street photography aesthetic.

He spent his formative years between the decaying council estates and the wilderness of county Donegal—a region of striking natural beauty, yet marked by poverty and crime. This contrast would go on to shape his perspective, forming the foundation of a practice that merges the wild with the man-made.

“One moment I was watching the silhouettes of young lads dancing around the burning frame of a stolen car; the next day, I could quietly observe wild hares boxing on the hills. I struggled to see the boundary between those environments—it felt as though we were left to become as wild as the land that surrounded us.”

Nature became both a teacher and a way of understanding life’s complexities.

“It gave me a deep empathy for my mother, who struggled with bipolar disorder and addiction. In her own way, she taught me to embrace nature for what it is—a force greater than myself. Nature became my mother, and my mother reflected the wildness of nature.”

Working with minimal equipment and a stripped-back approach, McGroarty embraces the belief that it is vision—not tools—that defines the artist. This philosophy has led to collaborations with Nikon through their Learn & Explore initiative, highlighting the importance of light, composition, and instinct over gear.

His work has been exhibited internationally, including at Sotheby’s, the National Arts Club, the Louvre, Somerset House, M17 Centre of Contemporary Arts, and the William Brandt House. He has also been featured in documentaries and interviews with BBC, ABC, CNN, and RTÉ.

McGroarty is part of a new wave of contemporary artists redefining the relationship between humanity and the natural world.
